Porch Repair


The geniuses who built my house in 1905 extended the front porch out beyond the roof so that it would always and forever be exposed to the elements.  Turns out this was not such a good idea.

I don’t have the fortitude to extend the roof to where it should be, so I’m replacing the rot—as designed—and hoping to die of natural causes before it needs to be done again.

I couldn't saw this post out or pry it away from its joists, so I drilled holes for the claw on my pry-bar and went medieval on its ass. Every single board I installed was a different length. Blocking for new newel posts. The stairs are relatively more recent than the porch, so they have been spared and will get new paint. ...and a support post, just for overkill. That twisty 2x at the top is what the stringer had been attached to. So yeah I added a post instead of replacing it. Sue me. It's because the old newel posts went through the decking and anchored to the joists that I cut them out. The last post remains. For no other reason than to memorialize my shame. The little board at the top was to fill a 4" bit of rot at the end of it's particular joist. Why replace the whole thing?
